If I had my druthers I would want Merle Haggard or Willie Nelson [or both] to sing this ‘outlaw country’ song… After the Civil War in America the west was conquered by the US cavalry and ‘settlers’ and they were BRUTAL toward the Mexicans and Indians who were the original inhabitants who had lived there for at least 10,000 years… But there were some travelers and some cowboys who were friendly with the native tribes and sometimes traded horses for a wife… It was a different time… My backup band is Loren & the Invisibles…
runnin’ from the cavalry man c2010 by Keith Harden
I’m just a lonesome cowboy
I hope that my old paint can find the trail
I’m just a ragged rounder
one day ahead of prison hell
I’m headed for the badlands
where the ghosts of the buffalo roam
hope to find some shelter
up where the Cheyenne River flows - river flows
where there ain’t no wagon wheels can roll
where there ain’t no fenced in land
trade some silver for some Yukon gold
runnin’ from the cavalry man
in the saddle until sundown
I need a place to bed down for the night
campfire sparks are flyin’
I’m dreamin’ of my young Lakota bride
we had two good years together
then a bluecoat took her young sweet life
I emptied out my pistol
last shot was right between his eyes - & so I ride
and the wanted posters say - “dead or alive”
they say I’m armed & dangerous - shoot on sight
