In a nostalgic journey back 50 years, we commemorate the release of Dolly Parton's timeless record album, Jolene. This musical classic, featuring ten soul-stirring songs, includes two of Parton's signature recordings – the unforgettable "Jolene" and the timeless "I Will Always Love You."
Recorded at the historic RCA Studios (Studio B) in Nashville, Tennessee, the album came to life during sessions in the summer of 1973. The title track "Jolene" had already made its mark as a single in October 1973, before reaching the pinnacle of the country singles chart on February 2, 1974. On February 4, Jolene was officially released under the RCA Victor label and on March 11th, "I Will Always Love You" followed as a single. The song achieved its own triumph by securing the number one spot on Billboard's Hot Country Single chart on June 8th. Both records could be found on jukeboxes throughout the country helping to propel the album to number 6 on the Billboard Charts.
What adds to the magic of this album is the fact that Parton reportedly penned both songs on the same day. The emotional resonance of "I Will Always Love You" would later find its way to the top of the charts two more times – first in 1982 when Parton re-recorded it for "The Best Little Whore House in Texas" movie soundtrack (RCA Records), and then in 1992 when Whitney Houston's rendition for "The Bodyguard" took the world by storm on Artista Records.
The historic significance of RCA Studio B, where the magic of "Jolene" unfolded, cannot be overstated as well. This iconic building in Nashville holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places, immortalizing the legacy of Dolly Parton's timeless creation and numerous others including The Everly Brothers, David Bowie, The Strokes, and Elvis Presley.
