Kris Kristofferson’s classic ballad was first recorded in this dramatic Ray Stevens arrangement, though it was Johnny Cash’s shorter, brighter, radio-friendly release the following year which got more exposure and caught on with both pop and country record buyers (listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KUi-pYHOIU ).
