If you were a young teen in 2006, or the parent of one, Miley Cyrus has been a part of the soundtrack to your life for over a decade now. Here are some of our favorite Miley jams to spice up our daily lives.
Rainbowland (feat. Dolly Parton)
Miley’s 2017 Younger Now album is full of lo-fi, bluegrass, bluesy hits that feel like a homage to one of her earliest influences, Elvis. Every song takes us on a car ride down a dirt road in the country, but our favorite to listen to on a slow morning whilst making brunch--well that’s “Rainbowland” featuring Dolly Parton because how could that NOT put you in the best mood possible? The song begins with a sweet voicemail from Dolly herself, and you know what? Imagining Dolly is my Godmother for a few seconds every Sunday is a feeling I don’t want to give up. Ever.
Party In The U.S.A.
If you’ve ever been to a wedding where “Party In The U.S.A.” didn’t play mid-reception when everyone’s had at least four drinks from the open bar, it wasn’t a good wedding. In fact, if you’ve been anywhere in the U.S.A. drinking and this didn’t play, it wasn’t as good a night as it could have been. Miley released this song when she was just 17. Eleven years later, it still hits the same as it did at senior prom. When the drinks are flowing, “Party In The U.S.A.” is playing.
We Can’t Stop
Lemme paint this picture: you’re in the Uber after your high school reunion. You’re a lil buzzed. Your old bff is equally tipsy in the backseat with you. “We Can’t Stop” comes on. It’s your second wind. Sure, you might get a two-star rating from your Uber driver, but you can’t help singing along. There’s no better song to hear when reminiscing with old friends than “We Can’t Stop”.
Midnight Sky
“Midnight Sky” was the debut single off of Plastic Hearts and it quickly made its way into our regular rotation. These days, alone time is greatly valued and hard to come by. Sometimes, the only way to get that time with yourself and do some good thinking is to go on a long drive. Hop in your car and turn on “Midnight Sky” and let your mind wander. Pay attention to the road, of course. But if you’re looking for a song to take you on a personal journey AND make you feel like a badass in your Honda Civic, look no further than “Midnight Sky.”
Slide Away
Some of us are still suffering from 2020 PTSD and we’re looking for new beginnings, fresh starts, and a light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Add “Slide Away” to your “new me” playlists. Miley wrote this song after her break up with longtime on-again, off-again partner Liam Hemsworth. The song is all about growing up, moving on, and embracing the person she’s become. I think we could all use that kind of rejuvenation in the coming years. Take a deep breath, pour yourself a nice tea, and think happy thoughts with “Slide Away” in the background.
