Over its 80-year history, the various film iterations of A Star Is Born have involved some of our greatest screen talents—from Janet Gaynor and Fredric March (1937) to Judy Garland and James Mason (1954) and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson (1976). In A Star Is Born’s first two iterations, the male lead is a fading matinee idol (Norman Maine) with a very public drinking problem. His love interest, Esther Blodgett (stage name: Vicki Lester), also goes into the movies—first as a straight actor and then, in 1954, as a star of Hollywood musicals. (A several-decades-old spoiler: In both the 1937 and 1954 versions, Esther goes on to win an Oscar, and Norman drunkenly storms the stage, interrupting her speech.)
