SHOW NOTES Chapter 4: Morning at Green Gables was read by: Jenn Grant and Daniel Ledwell with help from Gus (and Birdie and Charlie).
Have we yet had a more idyllic family setting for bedtime/story time? Those of you watching know that Jenn and Dan were sweating (literally) to bring you that Norman Rockwell* action, but you’ll be glad to know that they’ve hydrated and settled and are now having some popcorn. They were reading from their home in Nova Scotia, home of the Mi’kmaq people.
*Norman Rockwell: the American painter who painted almost all of those idyllic 'every day lives' images. If you're not thinking Norman Rockwell you're probably thinking Currier and Ives. Either is appropriate.
Our question for you today: What is Your Life Provides Scope for Imagination?

We are collecting funds for 38 days - more info in the Event Page. If every person who has watched so far contributed just $1, we would have already reached our goal! Thanks so much for your generous donations already - we are so grateful. Please share #Annedemic as widely as possible - we’re still only on chapter 4 but it already feels like it’s going so quickly!
Fun Facts:
*Jenn was “Miss Anne Shirley” in 1992, when she was 12 years old. She sang a few songs and read a bit of a book and won $100 and got a sash (very big news in the pageant world). Jenn also capitalised the ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS and the SASH when we were exchanging notes, so if you want to win the girl over, you’ve just learned how.
**Baby Gus is 15 months old, and will be a big brother in about 10 weeks! Congratulations family!
***Lots of queries about what was in Dan’s glass (and how did they keep glass, baby, book all so well balanced) - it was a Hot Toddy - that’s whisky, water, lemon juice, cinnamon and honey. And we know you’ll all have your own special additions given to you by Aunt Agnes for ‘medicinal purposes’ - feel free to share here.
****As usual, lots of questions about the dogs. Charlie (first doggo) is an Australian labradoodle. He is the big red one. He is 9. Bird is the mini Australian labradoodle. She is 6.
*****Take particular note of the irony at around 12 minutes where Anne/Marilla/Jenn are discussing children while Jenn is wrangling Gus and his bottle.
******Anne names the apple-scented geranium on Marilla’s window ‘Bonny’. It means: pretty, charming and beautiful.
*******We are here for Team Matthew - king of the passive-aggressive approach to ‘Getting The Wrong Orphan and Keeping Her’. Just gives Marilla a dirty look as he heads out of doors that morning and she’s all ‘Why won’t he come out and give me a good clean fight?’
********The Sorrel Mare is back, guys, and ‘whizzing down the road at an alarming pace’. Thinking of renaming these first few chapters: The Fast and the Furious: Avonlea Drift. For clarification on what a sorrel mare is, please see earlier notes. We are looking forward to finding out about the other horses at Green Gables but also love the Sorrel Mare. Anyone know what her name is yet?
**********Jenn braided one side of Dan’s hair while he was reading. He remains single braided. Even Anne and Willie (with an E) Nelson had to start somewhere.
*Jenn’s beautiful song to finish is ‘Blue Skies’ from her album ‘Orchestra For The Moon’ (2007). Please purchase rather than stream!
**The descriptions of the plants and trees at the beginning of this chapter are just wonderful. In Jenn and Dan's yard, they have a lilac try that Jenn is encouraging to grow, dandelions that they keep for the bees and lots of fern, moss, birch and clover. Spring has only just started, everyone. We know you’re in isolation (if you can be), but if you have a garden, have a look around and look at the magic coming together - and if you’re somewhere where the brook is still ‘laughing under ice’ - we have sunny days ahead together.
Translation:
‘Still Matthew said nothing’ trans: ‘Just giving you some time to see how magical she is!’ Backs out of the room doing jazz hands.
What Is?:
A Feather Tick: Anne wrestles with this (Dan says in the reading that he didn’t know what it was either) when trying to make her bed. A tick is a linen or cotton bag filled with feathers… yes, it’s a mattress. And you thought yours was uncomfortable. Just think, the Princess and the Pea was sleeping on 18 or so of these. You know who doesn’t get enough air time in that story? The Princess’s house keeper. Anne can’t even handle one of these babies.
Today’s crew:
Anne… no wait… Marilla… no, Narrator/Parenting: Daniel Ledwell
Narrator… wait...Anne...Parenting… Hair...Marilla/Anne/Marilla/Anne: Jenn Grant
Baby: Gus
Space Station Control: Tim and Annie in TO, and Isolation Station Australia
