Self-help was an industry in the 1970's. A relatively more extreme strain, Werner Erhard's "est trainings" offered participants the opportunity for radical personal transformation over the course of two intense weekends. In this scene from "Semi-Tough", Barbara Jean goes to a "BEAT" training to try to get "It". The film, adapted Dan Jenkins's novel, is about the relationship of three friends, two professional football players (Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson, seen briefly at the end of this scene) and the daughter (Clayburgh) of their team's owner. The satire of est was I believe added in the screenplay by Walter Bernstein and Ring Lardner, Jr. Directed by Michael Ritchie, 1977.
