BEST WAYS TO CELEBRATE HOLI THIS YEAR One of the most awaited festivals and celebrated nationwide in India, Holi marks the onset of spring, symbolises victory over evil and encourages brotherhood and harmony. India celebrates this Festival of Colours in different shades catering to a myriad of experiences. 1. COLOURS, COLOURS AND MORE COLOURS Obviously as the name goes, get drenched in all shades of colours in the best possible way this Holi. 2. JOIN THE BHANG, LASSI AND ALCOHOL DRIVEN FRENZY Don’t take it easy this time. Hashish, marijuana, alcohol and varieties of bhang certainly take Holi parties to a new height. These parties are more likely to get a bit rough though. 3. EAT LIKE YOU’VE NEVER EATEN BEFORE Of course, after playing with all those colours, getting high and dancing like crazy everyone will need to replenish their energy. Gorge on varieties of delicious light street foods of the season. Now full? Go back to the party. 5. PLAY WITH FLOWERS IN PHOOLON KI HOLI Reliving the Holi legends of Radha and Krishna and the pranks young Krishna played on the gopis (cowgirls) devotees from all corners of India or rather the world, shower flower petals on Radha Krishan at Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan. 6. BEAT OR GET BEATEN AT LATHMAR HOLI/ BRAJ KI HOLI Attend this Holi if you are daring enough. Legends say the tradition of Holi began here in the Braj region, i.e. Vrindavan, Mathura, Nandgaon and Barsana. The festival of Holi is celebrated for at least a month here and not just with colors! Yes, the women in Barsana beat up men from neighbouring Nandgaon with lathis. Because they know will be hit with lathis, the men come prepared too. Liquid and dry bhang is a bonus. 7. A FAN OF MARTIAL ARTS? YAOSHANG FOR SPORTS LOVERS AND VAISHNAVITES In the Imphal Valley of North-Eastern state of Manipur, Holi is known as Yaoshang. It’s a six day package of Holi Palas, lots of fun and frolick with water balloons and colours, rock concerts and a mini olympiad of sports during daytime; Moonlight or Thabal Chongba dances and Shumang lila- an indigenous form of drama are treats for the night. Yaoshang concludes with the halankar procession of Brajmai Sabis on the sixth day. 9. BALDEO (DAUJI) HURANGA Dauji means ‘elder brother’ and huranga means ‘throwing of colours’ While Braj is primarily known for its emphasis on Krishna devotion, Balrama reigns supreme during the festival of Holi. Huranga, which means throwing of color, is unique to Dauji. Vast quantities of bhang-laced thandai is offered as “Prasad” in the morning. Women rip off the mens’ shirts. They twist these shirts, dip them in water and thrash the men. On the other hand, men cannot touch these women or unveil their faces. 10. NEW COLOURS FOR THE SECLUDED: HOLI FOR WIDOWS Shunned by families and living as recluses in the ashrams of Vrindavan, since the year 2015 thousands of otherwise white-clad widows broke away from years of social stigma stepping into the colourful limelight of a day of fun! The Holi revelries began with songs; dances and these widows who wear only white sarees smear colours on each other to celebrate the festival.
