"Lay Lady Lay", sometimes rendered "Lay, Lady, Lay", is a song written by Bob Dylan and originally released in 1969 on his Nashville Skyline album. Like many of the tracks on the album, Dylan sings the song in a low croon, rather than in the high nasal singing style associated with his earlier (and eventually later) recordings. The song has become a standard and has been covered by numerous bands and artists over the years.

In the early 1970's when I was supposed to be attending trade school, I skipped school to go to the movies. I was walking up the street from the train station in Melbourne Australia, on my way to a small café I had been to before; they made a great cappuccino. It was early the morning and I saw Johnny Cash out for a walk with his son. He saw me looking his way and he turned back to the hotel. He had nothing to worry about with me. It was interesting to see him but I was eager for my coffee and in no way interested in bothering him. The year must have been 1973 as Mr Cash was on tour in Australia then. I entered the café, order my cappuccino, sat down and took some time to flick through the music selector. Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay was still available for play. I give the machine my money, pressed the appropriate buttons and by that time my coffee had arrived. I drank my cappuccino to the sound of Lay Lady Lay. Drew
