‘’Hole in a Ring’’ is undoubtedly Cindy Alter back at her very best. Soulful, earthy and rapturous in her treatment of the song, captured in a really fine country-rock production by producer Matthew Fink and executive producers Benjy Mudie and Charles Kühn.
When acclaimed South African singer Cindy Alter recently featured as a guest vocalist on a recording session at Just Music for the legendary, late country artist Lance James’ track ‘’Tower of song’ for his 'Swansong' album, Just Music’s A&R and production team were taken aback by Cindy’s emotive vocal delivery. It was evident that Cindy Alter, an artist that has experienced a remarkable journey in the music industry that kicked off in the late 70’s as lead singer for the international chart-topping band Clout (“Substitute’’; “Save Me’’…) was aching to get back into the recording studio.
After a series of demo recordings and a wider search for a song that would hopefully get Cindy back on top, a songwriter’s demo of “Hole in A Ring’’ was presented to Just Music CEO and producer Matthew Fink by A&R executive Benjy Mudie with an immediate positive reaction.
Cindy Alter was brought in to hear the song demo. She fell in love with it too and plans were put in place to secure the exclusive rights and record ‘’Hole in a Ring’’.
‘’Hole in a Ring’’ was written together by Grammy Award songwriter Wayne Carson and South African artist/songwriter Cofield Mundi in one of the original Music Row Studios in Nashville. It was the first song that Wayne Carson had written in five years and it was also his last. Sadly, he passed away earlier this year (Ironic, as the words of the song say "I won't need a next, but I wouldn't pass").
In 1967, Wayne Carson wrote the major hit, "The Letter", inspired by several pages of lyrics sent by his father. The song was an international hit for The Box Tops and later for Joe Cocker and Leon Russell and was nominated for two Grammys. Carson's song "Always on My Mind" won Grammy awards in 1983 for Song of the Year and Best Country Song; in 1982 it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Country charts. The Country Music Association named it the Song of the Year in 1982 and 1983. Also in 1982, The Nashville Songwriters Association International named it Song of the Year and the Academy of Country Music named it Single of the Year.
In 1997 Carson was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Cofield Mundi released a series of acclaimed singles and albums in South Africa between 2008 and 2012 before relocating to Nashville to focus on her song writing.
