written by Steve Goodman, 1971. I can't think of Steve Goodman without thinking of Chicago, Illinois and John Prine. And I can't think about John Prine without thinking about Kris Kristofferson. Steve Goodman was inspired to write this song after traveling by train to see his wife's grandmother in Mattoon, Illinois. I have always loved train songs, and they don't get much better than this! Central Illinois has always felt like home to me, and I can't see a train in Illinois without thinking about this song. I think the best version is Willie Nelson's version released in 1984. Johnny Cash has a version, as does Arlo Guthrie and John Denver. Willie and Johnny sang it again with The Highwaymen.
