As police forces across the world are given special powers to impose lockdowns online videos emerge showing some prevention measures turning violent.

Kenyan police have used tear gas to disperse a crowd as people tried to board the last ferries to leave Mombasa hours before the curfew and more recently to stop traders.

In South Africa, water cannons and rubber bullets were also used against people unable to social distance living in crowded townships where social distancing is impossible.

While Rwanda was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to impose a lockdown, local media allege police shot dead two civilians for defying the measures.

Authorities deny this was related to coronavirus, and claim it was in self-defence.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has told security forces they should shoot dead anyone causing "trouble" in areas locked down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And in India, videos surfaced show police hitting people on the streets with batons for violating the rules during lockdown.
