Back in 1988, we aired a special on whitewater paddling on the St. Francis River in southeastern Missouri. Down the St. Francis featured interviews with enthusiasts of the sport, which hold the annual Missouri Whitewater Championships, now in its 54th year, on the river.
It’s a river that is atypical for this part of the country. With its granite rocks and trees, you might think you are on the banks of a river in Wyoming, Montana, or Colorado. It’s beautiful and large enough for whitewater kayaking and canoeing, but “it’s not a river for dawdlers,” said a paddler. It’s considered an excellent training river.
