Gary Busey had been in the musical groups Rubber Band and Carp before his acting career took off. He has acted in over 150 films and TV programs. He had roles in High Chaparral, Kung Fu, and was the last man killed on the CBS western Gunsmoke. His role as Kris Kristofferson's manager in A Star is Born in 1976 led to Leon Russell's writing "Lost Inside You" with that film's leading lady Barbra Streisand.
That was during the period when Gary went by the name Teddy Jack Eddy as the drummer on Leon Russell's albums Will o' The Wisp, Wedding Album, Make Love To The Music and Life & Love.
Playing the part of Buddy Holly in the 1978 film The Buddy Holly Story earned Gary an Oscar nomination as Best Actor. Here is "Clear Lake Medley" from that film, with Gary on lead guitar and vocal, Charles Martin Smith as Ray Bob Simmons on bass and Don Stroud as Jesse Charles on drums. That February 2, 1959 performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, was Buddy's last. He, The Big Bopper (J. P. Richardson) and Ritchie Valens perished in a plane crash after that show.
