Welcome to my "Honky Tonk Women" Guitar Lesson + Tutorial, by The Rolling Stones. This is one of the easiest songs you can play on guitar as it uses 4 simple chord shapes (G, C, D, A) and the most common strumming pattern ever. This country-rock classic is perfect if you are a beginner who is just getting started on guitar, but I also have some embellishments and a neat way to play the intro, for those of you who are past the beginner stage.

The lesson begins with the chord shapes: G, C, D, A. This song uses some very easy chords, and on the most basic level, can be one of the easiest songs on guitar. We practice switching between each of the chords, taking note of some simple tricks that will help make the transitions faster. We then practice them using downstrokes only, so we can get used to the order of the chords and play each one for the right amount of times. This will help you learn to keep your place to keep track of where you are in the song.

The strumming pattern for this one is the most common strumming pattern ever. We break it down, count it out, and then we put it back together before adding it to our chord progression and playing through the verse.

The chorus for this song is even simpler than the verse, it's just like a easy two chord song, going back and forth between G and D. We practice switching, and then we add our strumming pattern.

Before we finish up, I want to show you some embellishments that you can add that will transform the verse and make it sound a lot more like the original recording. These embellishments will require a couple more chord shapes, but you can think of them like simple transitions. We work out the fingering, we build the muscle memory and then we adapt our strumming pattern to fit them in. We practice adding them to the verse, playing through the entire thing, just so you can get used to adding these embellishments to the song.

One last thing I'd like to show you is how to "fake" the intro. This song is originally recorded in open G tuning on an electric guitar, but using just a couple of open strings, and a basic rhythm, we can make do something that sounds really similar. We work on muting the correct strings to make it easy to strum and playing those two easy notes on the correct beats.

Finally we discuss how to put this entire song together. The chord order is as follows:

INTRO (G)
VERSE
CHORUS
VERSE
CHORUS
SOLO (verse)
CHORUS x2

If you'd like to practice the entire song with me, there's a full playthrough available on my Patreon page, where I play through the entire song, start to finish. More information on that here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/57175399/
