Track 10 from their fourth album "Fore!" released in 1986 copyright Chrysalis Records. It was recorded at Studio D Recording and the Plant in Sausalito and Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA and was again produced by the band. It featured five Top Ten singles including two No. 1 hits and the album reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart. Their work on the soundtrack of "Back to the Future" had made the band superstars and this album continued their standard of great, uplifting songs. "Jacob's Ladder" was written by Bruce Hornsby for his new album that Huey Lewis was producing but he didn't like the result and gave it to Huey to record instead. "Hip to Be Square" was featured in the film "American Psycho" in a classic scene where Patrick Bateman murders his colleague with an axe in his living room while voicing his opinion of the merits of this album, eventually declaring that it is the band's most accomplished. It received above average reviews and reached No. 33 in the Netherlands, No. 22 in Austria, No. 16 in Belgium, No. 12 in Portugal, No. 8 in the U.K., No. 7 in Sweden, Iceland and Finland, No. 6 in Norway and Zimbabwe, No. 5 in Germany, No. 4 in Switzerland, No. 3 in Australia and No. 1 in New Zealand, Japan, Canada and the U.S. It was certified Gold in Germany, Platinum in New Zealand, 2X Platinum in the U.K., 3X Platinum in the U.S. and 5X Platinum in Canada. You go to work, work hard all day
At the end of the week you collect your pay, yeah
(That's just where it's at)
(It's as simple as that)
You pay your bills the best that you can
But the risin' costs sure hurts a family man
(While the rich man gets fat)
(it's as simple as that)
And the money goes so fast it ain't funny
(Ha, ha, ha, it ain't funny)
Your mind's made up to get that house on the hill
But you just don't know if you ever will
('Cause you can't get the cash)
(It's as simple as that)
'Cause the man from the bank, he won't give you a loan
Without putting a mortgage on all that you own
(A tit for a tat) that's how it is
(It's as simple as that)
Ooh, ooh, and the money goes so fast it ain't funny
(Ha, ha, ha, it ain't funny) no, no
(It's as simple, it's as simple)
(It's as simple as that) hey
Before you know it the kids, they're all grown
Married off with kids of their own
(Now it's all in the past) true story, yeah
(It's as simple as that)
You've reached the autumn of your life
And all that's left is you and your wife
(And a dog and a cat) that's how it is
(It's as simple as that)
Ooh, and the money goes so fast it ain't funny
(Ha, ha, ha, it ain't funny) no, whoa
(It's as simple, it's as simple)
(It's as simple as that) hey, yeah
(It's as simple, it's as simple)
(It's as simple as that) even though
(It's as simple) you spent a life in time (it's as simple) you never own it
(It's as simple as that) hey, yeah
