He gave her his Courage and Civility Award, and it came along with $100M. She was shocked but accepted it with grace, promising to continue to be a positive example to everyone. Dolly Parton has more charting singles than any other country artist and runs several businesses, yet she still finds time to give back. It all started in her small hometown of Sevier County, Tennessee. She founded Dollywood to make it a profitable tourist destination, but she then turned her focus to education. The Dollywood Foundation and its Buddy Program helped reduce high school dropout rates.
Her father was illiterate, and that inspired her to start one of her most famous programs. The Imagination Library began as a way to give young children books and is now a massive, international organization.
These programs made her, in her own words, “addicted to the feeling of giving.” She’s donated to hospitals and towards the Moderna vaccine. Her telethons helped the victims of fires and floods. She’s paid for uniforms and instruments in several black high schools. Dollywood has the largest unreleasable eagle sanctuary in the world. The list keeps growing and she keeps finding causes she wants to support. Dolly may exude confidence, but she feels a bit uncomfortable being recognized for her philanthropy. She doesn’t want anyone to idolize her because of what she’s done but hopes to inspire others. She also notes that she didn’t do it alone and tries to be a tough but fair boss to her employees.
