Cash asked for a glass of water, followed by smacking his lips and chewing like a cow. He was mocking one of the guards standing in the doorway chewing gum.
Country legend Merle Haggard was serving time in the prison and saw the performance, stating, “Well, he won the whole audience…When Cash left, there were guys all over that yard with guitars.
Johnny Cash went on to play several prison tours throughout his career, this concert being one of his first of the jail tours.
