Johnny Cash (født J.R. Cash; 26. februar 1932, død 12. september 2003) var en amerikansk musiker.

The Carter Family var en oldtime- og countrymusikkgruppe som opptrådte mellom 1927 og 1956. Musikken deres var et utgangspunkt for senere bluegrass, country, pop og rockemusikere. På 1960-tallet blåste U.S. folk revival-bevegelsen nytt liv i deres musikk. Helt til i dag har barn og barnebarn av de opprinnelige medlemmene holdt liv i familietradisjonene.

Den originale gruppa bestod av A.P. Carter (Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter, 1891-1960), hans kone Sara Carter (1898–1979) og Maybelle Carter (1909–78). Maybelle var gift med A.P’s bror Ezra. Alle tre var var født og oppvokst i Sørvest-Virginia, hvor de fant musikalsk inspirasjon i de tette harmoniene som ble brukt i gospel og korsang. Det kristne engasjementet forble et kjennetegn på deres musikk. Det samme ble Maybelles gitarspill. I 1939 ble Maybelles og Ezras datter, June Carter (senere kjent som June Carter Cash), med i gruppen.
