Originally, Ada Blenkhorn wrote "Keep on the Sunny Side" as a gospel hymn in about 1899. It gained popularity after a 1928 recording by the Carter family and has become a bluegrass and country standard. Optimistic "sunshine songs" were popular in that era, but Blenkhorn gives reason for her optimism in the final verse:
Let us greet with a song of hope each day,
Tho' the moments be cloudy or fair;
Let us trust in our Saviour always,
Who keepeth every one in His care.
