One of Leon Russell's longest relationships was that he had with Willie Nelson. Leon played piano on songs for him in 1962, became friends with him in 1972, performed at many of Willie's 4th of July picnics, recorded several times together, including their 1979 album One for The Road (with the Number One hit "Heartbreak Hotel") and remained life-long friends.
Here are two versions of them dueting on "Wabash Cannonball." You’ll love the ending of one of them! JJ Cale was a guitarist on this and the other two songs done that day at Pete’s Place in Nashville.
It was released on a single opposite "Tennessee Waltz," from Leon's 1984 album Hank Wilson's Back Vol. II, and then an alternate version was added as a bonus track on the CD release of his 1974 album Stop All That Jazz. Leon included it again as a track on his 2000 promo release Leon Russell Records Sampler.
