In October 2019, Lechuguilla Cave, in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, surpassed 150 miles in length. To commemorate this major milestone a two-day online symposium/celebration was held in November, 2020. During this two day event, 25 speakers discussed various aspects of the cave, from its exploration (on Saturday, November 14th) to the past and ongoing science in the cave (on Sunday, November 15th). Over 400 visitors attended the symposium, with further celebrations taking place at the 2021 NSS Convention in Weed, CA (http://nss2021.caves.org/).

Life in Lechuguilla: Microscopic to Macroscopic: Intraterrestrial to Extraterrestrial – Diana Northup
BIO: Diana Northup, University of New Mexico, USA: Understanding how life exists in the dark, subterranean biosphere of caves has fueled Diana’s passion for science for decades. In caves throughout the world, she studies extremophiles, including microbes that eat rock, and “microbes that masquerade as minerals,” to help better detect life on extraterrestrial bodies. For her Ph.D. research she studied microbes inhabiting ferromanganese deposits, also known as “gorilla shit.”
