"Okie from Muskogee" is a song recorded by American country music artist Merle Haggard and was released in September 1969

He died on April 6, 2016 - his 79th birthday - at his ranch in Northern California, having recently suffered from double pneumonia

Haggard told The Boot that he wrote the song after he became disheartened watching Vietnam War protests and incorporated that
emotion and viewpoint into song.

Haggard says, "When I was in prison, I knew what it was like to have freedom taken away. Freedom is everything. During Vietnam, there
were all kinds of protests. Here were these [servicemen] going over there and dying for a cause—we don't even know what it was really all about.

And here are these young kids, that were free, bitching about it. There's something wrong with that and with [disparaging] those poor
guys."

He states that he wrote the song to support the troops. "We were in a wonderful time in America, and music was in a wonderful place.
America was at its peak, and what the hell did these kids have to complain about? These soldiers were giving up their freedom and lives to make sure others could stay free.

I wrote the song to support those soldiers."

In a 2010 interview with American Songwriter, Haggard called the song a "character study," his 1969 self being the character: "It was the
photograph that I took of the way things looked through the eyes of a fool... and most of America was under the same assumptions I was.

As it's stayed around now for 40 years, I sing the song now with a different attitude onstage... I've become educated... I play it now with a different projection.

It's a different song now. I'm different now."

그래서 난 베트남 전쟁에 참전한 청년들을 지지하는 노래를 썼다.

"우린 미국에서 멋진 시간에 살고 있었고 음악은 휼륭한 장소에 있었다. 미국은 그 당시 절정에 있었다. 그런데 이 저항하는 청년들은 무엇을 불평
하는가?

이 군인들은 그들의 자유를 포기하고 다른 사람들이 자유롭게 하기 위해 싸웠다. 난 그 군인들을 지지하기 위해 이곡을 썼다."

2010년에 미국 작곡가 잡지사와 인터뷰에서, 해가드는 이곡을 "인물 연구"라고 불렀다. 그의 1969년에 그 자신이 "한 바보의 눈을 통해서 본 일들에 대한 사진이었다" 그리고 대부분의 미국인들은 같은 가정하에 있었다.
