Orville Peck Says Willie Nelson Wanted to Get "Gay Married" in Their New Country Music Video

In a new interview with GLAAD’s Anthony Allen Ramos, Orville Peck talks about the impact of working with country music legend Willie Nelson on his new single and what it means to have his support of the LGBTQ community. Plus Peck shares some new details about his forthcoming duets album “Stampede” and he opens up about “being the best version of himself” after taking time off last year to work on his mental health.

When talking about what it was like to have this project become a reality, Peck says, “I’m sort of pinching myself still. You know, it’s actually been a long time in the making this whole collaboration. Willie asked me about it a couple of years ago.” He goes on to explain he’s been a fan on Nelson his whole life. “It’s surreal. I’ve had years to accept it and it still hasn’t sunk in. So, I don’t know if it ever will.” Peck shares that the song was originally recorded by Latin Country artist Ned Sublette in the 80s.

He shares that Nelson wanted to “get gay married in the music video.” Saying he even said, “Annie, my wife, she can be the priest and she’ll give us away at the chapel!”

Annie did end up making a cameo in the video, shot at Nelson’s Texas ranch. “It was the most special day ever and I feel so honored to be included in Willie Nelson’s legacy in some way,” he shares.

Peck goes on to say, “I think that the fact that Willie stands next to the entire LGBTQIA+ community by doing this song just shows what an amazing person he is, what a legend he is… It’s a win for all of us because that’s true allyship. Someone who’s completely unafraid to be right there next to us, there’s no vagueness involved.”
