Public Speaking Matters / Episode 3: "The Rule of Three"

As a new member of Toastmasters International, Creator/Vlogger Leonard “Nard” Mann is fascinated with the multifarious facets of public speaking. Thus, as a disclaimer, he is in no way claiming that he is already an expert in public speaking. He started this series, “Public Speaking Matters,” to educate and remind himself of the different skills involved in delivering an excellent speech. He hopes that others will learn too from the different episodes.

For this Third Episode of the Series “Public Speaking Matters,” the Rule of Three is discussed, how it can be used to structure our speech, and to make our talks more interesting, memorable, and persuasive! The Romans understood the Rule of Three, and contextualized it in the Latin maxim “omne trium perfectum,” which means “everything that comes in threes is perfect.” Information presented in a group of three sticks in our head better.

In public speaking, the Rule of Three is a principle that states that ideas presented in threes are more interesting, memorable, and persuasive. If you pay close attention, and listen more carefully, you’ll be surprised how often you hear or see the Rule of Three around you. It’s used a lot of times because it’s effective. Let’s be mindful and intentional in our speeches. Let’s incorporate the Rule of Three in our talks, not in our love life!

So, the next time someone tells you I LOVE YOU, don’t say I LOVE YOU TOO. Say I LOVE YOU THREE! (Just kidding!)

Remember, stage presence is not pure talent. It is a learned skill. Therefore, as with any other skill, public speaking can be learned and mastered through constant practice! Let us keep learning, practicing, and improving one day at a time! Always bear in mind that there are no boring speeches, only boring speakers.
