The song tells the story of two Mexican gunfighters who are in a gunfight with seven Spanish angels. The angels are described as having "seven Spanish angels at the alter of the sun", and as being "sent down from glory just to carry me home". In the end, the two men are killed, but the angels carry them to heaven.
