"It is that time of the year where Una Rams is teasing fans with his much anticipated return. He teams up with likeminded singer and songwriter Shekhinah to bring us something soulful just in time for the summer over the signature Afrobeats sound which the artist has been experimenting with on with his latest projects.
The release follows his hit single Shy that will form part of his upcoming EP Crush. The new music is anchored by themes of pursuing love, as well as navigating relationships as a young man who is open to the vulnerability of it all. The forthcoming record Sixth Sense is produced by and also features C-Tea who Una Rams has worked with extensively on previous records - citing him as the 40 to his Drake. “Meeting him was the equivalent to those two meeting. We’re always going to make hits together”, Rams expresses about the collaboration with his longtime friend.
On working with Shekhinah, he expresses that the feature was a no brainer because she is someone who is incredibly gifted and her voice would’ve been immaculate on any track. He goes on to explain that the song Sixth Sense came about during a session with C-Tea in 2018. “Once the beat was done, it kind of felt a bit spooky but still beautiful and sexy so I started writing about a love that you try to keep away from the world”, Rams expresses.
Sixth Sense is a 4-minute long summary of how his relationships have been historically handled. It plays on the idea that being hyper-visible makes you want to keep certain moments to and only for yourself and the person they belong to. The song is also a play on the classic 1999 thriller where Bruce Willis plays a psychologist treating a child who can see ghosts. “I kind of compare my love interest in this sense to a ghost because the rest of the world can’t see them, but I can”, he explains as he dives into the concept of the single. “Shekhinah gave a beautiful rendition and expanded on this concept once I explained it to her. It just fit perfectly”.
The end result is what he gets most excited about. With C-Tea originally being from Ghana and singing “ɔsaman” (meaning ghost in Akan) along with Una incorporating Venda into the song which he does so well; he also pays homage to legendary Venda artist Colbert Mukwevho on the track. Sixth Sense captures the essence of Mukwevho’s philosophy, “what happens in my family does not need other people”.
The upcoming record and EP will ultimately be a collection of experiences over the past two years over a fusion of cultures, rhythms, love stories and cryptic messages and a not so cryptic love for love; and love for the continent and all its treasures."
