Stardust
Music: Hoagy Carmichael
Lyrics Mitchell Parish
Sometime in the mid-1920s, Carmichael first whistled the beginnings of the tune after leaving a university hangout called the Book Nook and spent the next several years working out the melody. In 1927 he booked a recording session with Gennett Records, and since he didn’t have any sheet music for the song, he whistled the tune to the other musicians who played on the recording while he played the piano. Later, while Carmichael worked for Mills Music as a composer, Irving Mills decided that the song needed some lyrics, though it had success previously published as an instrumental work, and assigned the task to Mitchell Parish. The sheet music for the vocal version was published in 1929 and quickly grew in popularity.
Stardust, considered to be a part of the Great American Songbook, has been recorded over 1,500 times, including by Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Glen Miller, and even some artists one might not expect like Willie Nelson (which reached number one on Country music charts), Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, and Rod Stewart.
