Tamsulosin is a medicine which is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia  (also known as BPH) in men. Tamsulosin commonly known as its brand name Flomax or Flomaxtra is a prescription medication. It belongs to a group of medicines called alpha-blockers. It works by relaxing the muscles of the prostate and bladder which leads to improved urine flow.

What is benign prostate hyperplasia? 
Benign prostate Hyperplasia is a Non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate which leads to narrowing of the urethra and it puts pressure on the base of the bladder. 

Symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia are
- slow urine flow
- urinary frequency—urination eight or more times a day
- urinary urgency—the inability to delay urination

Benign prostate hyperplasia is not life-threatening but it can significantly impact the quality of men’s life. Benign Prostate Hyperplasia happens more commonly as men grow older.  

All medicines have benefits and risks. You can discuss the benefit and risks with the doctor.  if your doctor prescribed Tamsulosin to you, this means that your doctor thinks that the benefit of taking it surpasses the risk of taking it. 

Before starting Tamsulosin, make sure

Make sure has checked you for Prostate cancer as symptoms of Prostate cancer and benign Prostate Hyperplasia are really similar.  It is recommended that men be checked for prostate cancer once a year from 50 years of age. A man may have Beninh prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer at the same time.

How to take Tamsulosin. 

Tamsulosin normally comes in 400 microgram modified-release capsules. It is usually a once a day dosing. Take it with a glass of water and swallow it whole. this means to don’t cut, crushed, chew, or bite it as it is a modified released medication

While taking Tamsulosin 
Be sure to keep all of your doctor's appointments so that your progress can be checked.
If you are about to be started on any new medicine, tell your doctor and pharmacist that you are taking FLOMAXTRA.
Tell your doctor if, for any reason, you have not taken your medicine exactly as prescribed.
Otherwise, your doctor may think it is not working effectively and change your treatment unnecessarily.

What are the side effects of tamsulosin? 
Like all medicines, Tamsulosin can cause some unwanted side effects in some people. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. 

Some common side effects are 
- "retrograde ejaculation". When this happens the ejaculation fluid is not squirted out, most of it runs back into the bladder. Retrograde ejaculation is painless.
- Dizziness - Be careful when driving or operating machinery until you know how Tamsulosin affects you.

Some Uncommon side effects are 
headache
skin rash (red spots or patches), itching, hives
weakness

Now If any of the following happen, Go to accident and emergency at your nearest hospital immediately, these cases are extremely rare, but it’s important that you are informed. 
1. if you have prolonged painful erection of the penis, which is unrelated to sexual activity. If you have a prolonged erection, call your doctor or go to the Emergency Room as soon as possible.
