The Chicago Bands of all Time - Part One
The Buckinghams
The pop band formed in 1966 and went on to become one of the top-selling acts of 1967, charting their only five top 40 hits in the U.S. that year, including the No. 1 hit “Kind of a Drag.” The title track of their debut LP in 1966, the single reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in February. Their second album “Time & Charges,” yielded two top 10 singles, “Don’t You Care” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” Their next album, “Portrait,” included their last two top 40 hits, “Hey Baby (They’re Playing Our Song)” and “Susan.”
Chicago
Named for the Windy City, the band formed in 1967, first calling themselves the Chicago Transit Authority in 1968 before shortening the name in 1969. The self-described “rock and roll band with horns” blended elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, and pop music and had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. During the ‘70s, the group created such memorable songs as “Make Me Smile,” “Saturday in the Park,” “Old Days,” and “If You Leave Me Now.” Renewed in the ‘80s, the band scored hits like “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” “Hard Habit to Break,” “You’re the Inspiration,” and “Look Away.”
Earth, Wind & Fire
One of the most innovative and commercially successful acts of all time, Earth, Wind & Fire spanned numerous musical genres, including R&B, soul, funk, jazz, disco, pop, rock, dance, and Latin. Founded in 1969, the group had their first big hit in 1975 with “Shining Star,” No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard pop chart and the R&B chart, their first of eight R&B No.1 singles. The band continued to put out several Top 10 singles throughout the ‘70s and early ‘80s with “Sing a Song,” “Got to Get You Into My Life,” “September,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “After the Love has Gone,” and “Let’s Groove.”
Styx
Establishing itself with a progressive rock sound in the 1970s, the band Styx began to incorporate more pop rock and soft rock elements in the 1980s. Formed in Chicago in 1972, Styx had eight songs hit the Top 10 on the Billboard pop chart: “Lady,” “Come Sail Away,” the No. 1 chart topper “Babe,” “The Best of Times,” “Too Much Time On My Hands,” “Mr. Roboto,” “Don’t Let It End,” and “Show Me the Way.” Other notable songs include “Renegade,” “The Grand Illusion,” “Blue Collar Man,” and “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).”
Survivor
Formed in 1978, Survivor achieved its greatest success in the 1980s, most notably the double-platinum-certified 1982 smash “Eye of the Tiger.” The title track to the band’s third album, and the theme song for the 1982 motion picture “Rocky III,” the single spent six weeks at the number one spot. The band continued to chart several hits in the mid-‘80s, including four Top 10s with singles like “I Can’t Hold Back,” “High On You,” “The Search Is Over,” “Burning Heart,” a No. 2 hit in 1986 from “Rocky IV,” and “Is This Love.”
