The song tells the story of an Irish sailor and his adventures sailing around Europe, while his loyal lover/wife waits at home 'in a small Cork town'.
The melody is similar to the air of the 19th century, tradional Irish song, Roddy McCorly. The same melody was borrowed by the Irish ballad group, The Wolf Tones, for their song Sean South
