Join us for an education event around the radical legacy of the historical Jesus of Nazareth, and what we can learn from his anti-imperial, non-violent movement!

Philosopher Slavoj Zizek says that religion and spirituality are like empty vases that can be filled with any class or political content -- this is how the words of an anti-Roman, anti-imperial preacher of egalitarian commensality have been used in defense of American capitalism and American Empire. In this talk, we will work to reconstruct and uncover the the real teachings of Jesus around 1) Wealth, 2) Family, and 3) what "The Kingdom of God on Earth" really means.

This talk will draw from the works of Christian historians and anthropologists like J.D. Crossan, Bart Ehrman, Fr. Gustavo Gutierrez and Christian Chiakulas, as well as the NRSV of the Bible.

"21“One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” -- Mark 10:21-25

"But woe unto you who are rich
For you have received your only comfort" -- Luke 6:24

"Jesus Christ was a man
Who travelled through the land
A carpenter true and brave
And he said to the rich:
'Give your goods to the poor'
So they laid Jesus Christ in his grave" -- Merle Haggard

The discussion will be hosted by PHP co-founder Bryan Kim, a Yellow American revolutionary, professional speaker, and co-host of the Wrong Prophets podcast. He has been involved in racial and environmental justice issues since 2010. In 2018, he co-founded Decriminalize Nature Portland, which advocates for equity in psychedelic decriminalization
