How did “We Are The World” start? The concept for the song originated with entertainer and civil rights advocate Harry Belafonte. Though it was composed by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, the challenge lay in assembling a group of top music artists to record the song. After the American Music Awards in January 1985, Richie and co-producer Quincy Jones brought together notable musicians into an L.A. recording studio. These were big names like Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, and Willie Nelson to name a few. Over 45 artists worked through the night and emerged at 7:00 a.m. with a massive hit that would be a masterpiece.
