All over the world, people are rescuing animals that were bred, abused, sold on the black market, or simply neglected, by sheltering them in sanctuaries and in their homes. By caring for these wounded animals, we are learning how much they give back, by learning to trust human beings again. The narrative spine of the film is an ancient Japanese fable about a wounded crane, saved by peasants, that tries to express her gratitude with a gift. Vanessa Redgrave narrates illustrated scenes from the fable, which are interwoven with stunning footage filmed in animal sanctuaries. As the film unfolds, we cannot help but wonder, who is saving who?
