With the introduction of new rules that allowed GT cars to take part in the 24h Le Mans race and pushed by Stéphane Ratel, director of competition services for the French company and organizer of the one-make Gentlemen Drivers Trophy, Venturi developed and unveiled a new car, based on their 400 Trophy, in order to take part in the famous endurance race. Called 500 LM and aimed at gentleman racers, the purchasers were guaranteed to receive help and support from the factory, which had every intention of seizing this opportunity to further develop their renown. Seven 500 LMs were entered in the 1993 edition and a few more chassis were entered in the IMSA GT round at Laguna Seca and in the 6 hours of Vallelunga.
1994 saw the birth of the BRP championship, an endurance series specifically for GT-based cars, founded in order to replace the World Sportscar Championship which had ended in 1992 (in 1997 it will be known as FIA GT Championship). The first BRP race took place on the Paul Ricard circuit and saw two Venturi 500 LMs lined up, amidst a stream of Venturi 400 Trophy cars, fighting mainly against a variety of Porsche, later being joined by modified Ferrari F40s, Lotus Esprits, and Callaway Corvettes. It was during the second race that two 600 LMs made their first appearance.
They were basically upgraded 500 LMs, with refined aero and rear wing, reinforced gearbox and a reworked engine. The PRV V6 engine was able to produce 600hp at 1.3 bar of turbo pressure by the third round of the championship. Significantly more competitive, the 600 LM notched up the first Venturi international victory ahead of Ferrari and Porsche.
The one you see in this video is chassis n° LM005. It was born as a 500 LM in 1993 and then converted to 600 LM specs in 1995. It was fielded in three consecutive Le Mans 24h (1993, 1994 and 1995) and highly used in the BRP championship. For the 1995 24h race the car was entered with a livery painted by the Italian artist Gianni Celano Gianicci, acquiring the status of Art Car.
Watch it in action around Imola Circuit during the 2018 Italian round of the Masters Endurance Legends series.
