In this series, we’ll be playing as Brazil, and reforming the nation from an agrarian, authoritarian slave state into a secular constitutional monarchy under the enlightened leadership of the intelligentsia, aiming to eventually achieve universal suffrage, guaranteed liberties, and robust social welfare programs. The one caveat is that if this ends in the failure of the monarchy, then we’ll establish a conservative republic aiming to maintain stability and beat back the tide of newfangled ideological movements sweeping the world throughout the Victorian century. It will probably be a 40ish episode run all the way to 1936, but if I haven't gotten the whole thing recorded by the time the new patch comes out, we'll stop wherever I end up.

Episode twenty sees us complete the survey of the Panama Canal Zone. Alas, the United States’ holding a treaty port in the area forces us to reconsider our plans. An Afro-Caribeño uprising in Panama raises hopes that a glitch may break the treaty port mechanic and give us what we want, but it is not to be. The rest of the episode consists of us reshaping the economy to adapt to having a fully steel-frame construction sector, and deciding what to do about the Panama Canal situation. War with the United States may be necessary…

Episode Timeframe: January 1887 - June 1889

Recorded in patch 1.6.2 "Blackcurrant" with all DLC enabled.
