The song was Number 1 in the country charts in 1972 - Kris' first as an artist in his own right and
in 1973 it won the Dove award for the "Gospel Song of the Year", beating off nine other nominies.
The song made its Billboard Hot 100 debut on April 7, 1973. The single release on the Monument Records label was on the Hot 100 chart for an amazing 38 weeks and peaked at #18. It crossed over to the Country chart where it topped the chart at #1. The single sold well over 1 million copies earning Kris a "Gold Record". The backing vocals on the record are by his soon to be wife Rita Coolidge and singer/songwriter Larry Gatlin.

There is a nice story about how it came to write this song. Kris told it in an interview. To make it short, Kris hadn't been to church since his wedding to Fran in 1961, and then a girl ("I 'd go anywhere she asked me to go") took him to that church in Hendersonville. Kris was inexplicably moved by Larry Gatlin singing "Help me" and everything that was happening there and in the end he found hisself doing weird things there he never thought he ever would do in front of a bunch of strange people. But when it was over he felt like some big burden had been lifted off his shoulders and the words for this song came without thinking up, he was just holding the pen...
