The wildfires that ravaged Maui in early August were the deadliest in the U.S. in more than a century, killing at least 115 people and destroying thousands of homes and businesses. The fire was fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, and burned through the historic town of Lahaina. The fire also threatened Winfrey’s estate, but she opened her private road to allow evacuees and firefighters to access it. Johnson visited an emergency shelter on Maui and expressed his gratitude to the first responders and volunteers.
