Billy Joe Shaver wrote "Willie the Wandering Gypsy and Me" in the early 1970s, inspired by his friendship with Willie Nelson and their shared lifestyle of constant travel, music, and rebellion. The song is rooted in freedom, camaraderie, and a sense of longing.

Shaver had grown up in poverty in Corsicana, Texas, and worked blue-collar jobs before finding his voice in country music. His lyrics were unpolished and deeply personal, reflecting his own struggles and experiences.

He and Waylon Jennings first crossed paths at Dripping Springs Reunion, a 1972 music festival in Texas, where Shaver played "Willie the Wandering Gypsy and Me" and other songs in a small trailer backstage.

Jennings was so impressed that he ended up using Shaver’s songs for his groundbreaking "Honky Tonk Heroes" album, helping define the outlaw country movement.
