The HISTORY behind the date, 26th January –


Lahore hosted the Indian National Congress session in 1929 with Jawaharlal Nehru as the President. At that time, a section of INC was satisfied with ‘dominion status’, wherein the British monarch would continue to be the head of government. But, people like Subhash Chandra Bose and Nehru were together working to oppose those supporting the dominion status.



January 26, 1930, was then celebrated as the ‘Poorna Swaraj’ day for the next 17 years. On this particular day, INC passed the Poorna Swaraj Resolution or the Declaration of Independence.



India got Independence in 1947 and the constitution of India was adopted on 26th November 1949. The Poorna Swaraj day was then seen as the best option and since then it is celebrated as the country’s Republic Day.
